On this cold and miserable Anzac day, in need of something to break the monotony of study and house work (Oh no ... no Two Up for me!) i decided to take a little trip. I wanted to get away from the world and think of not much, but i didn't want to go far. So i decided to take a drive around to Botany Bay National Park to look out from the whale watching spot and watch the waves against the grey sky. This was more risky than it sounds, as my National Parks Annual Pass had run out over ten days ago so i would be in troubled if my car was approached by a ranger. Undeterred a wrapped up warm and was on my way.
On arrival there were many grey haired huddles bracing against the wind, and this some what killed the serenity i was looking for. So i decide to roam a little further. I Thought of the surf spot known to locals as Voodoo, and wondered whether today the vicious waves there would be crashing against the reef in the satisfying manner they tend to have. So i decided to find out.
A spooky place to be on a grey day but very wild. Once parked in the Voodoo car park i wondered down on to the rocks. Disappointingly the waves were blown out by a strong wind and the swell....just not working. However something else grabbed my attention ....the smell!!. Voodoo is known for its hazards: as stated on the Wannasurf website there are urchins rips rocks and sharks. Moreover people who surf there know the water is far from perfect there is a sewage plant nearby and and the oil refinery. But how bad is it? With the growing population in the Sutherland Shire surely there is just more poo?! Is it safe to surf there? Does this poo make its way to the popular Cronulla beach in the right wind?
I think i have found my mission.
